Lang was student of Emil Artin, and started in algebra and number theory, evolving further into algebraic geometry, and then running over several fields including diophantine approximations, trancendental numbers, complex hyperbolic spaces in relation to diophantine questions, and finally teaming up with Jorgenson, going into analysis, especially spectral de composition, as it relates to number theory.
