Research Goals :
To understand the structure and substrate specificity of cyclin-dependent protein
kinases, and the mechanism of cyclin destruction.
Hunt has identified a protein he named cyclin because its level rises and falls during the cell cycle. Cyclins, it is now known, bind to CDKs to activate them. The amount of CDK molecules remains constant in a cell, but the molecules' activity varies because of the regulatory function of the cyclins.
Selected Honours and Awards :
1993 Abraham White Scientific Achievement Award of the George Washington University
2001 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, with Leland H. Hartwell and Paul
M. Nurse, "for their discoveries of "key regulators of the cell cycle."
